Semillitas means “little seeds”, and we work on planting the seeds that will grow lifelong readers and writers. Our mission is to help develop good reading habits, make reading fun, and create comfortable places to discuss ideas and opinions.

This project began as a story time in Dallas over 12 years ago when our founder's oldest was a toddler. As her family grew and her children got older Ofelia realized that growing lifelong readers was a constant process so she began developing a variety of activities that grew with her childrens needs.

This project began as a story time in Dallas over 12 years ago when our founder's oldest was a toddler. As her family grew and her children got older Ofelia realized that growing lifelong readers was a constant process so she began developing a variety of activities that grew with her childrens needs.
The story time morphed into a children's book club. Over time public reading nooks and book exchanges were incorporated to insure community members had access to reading material. Literary-centered and culturally relevant experiential activities and workshops were added as well and a movement was born.
To date we've given away thousands of books and helped families see that reading is fun and something to do in community.

Ofelia “MexMama” Faz-Garza is a mama, poet, and cultural worker from Dallas. She’s an adjunct instructor at a local college, a freelance columnist, and has work that has been included in several anthologies. Reading has been one of her favorite things to do since childhood.
Donate Now
We are dedicated to growing lifelong readers in our communities. Your donations and support allow us to increase the following:
- Access to books that reflect the diversity that exists in our families.
- Opportunities for children to tell their own stories through art and writing.
- The visibility of creatives of color and their work.
Monetary donations purchase books and art supplies for pop-ups, reading nooks, story-times, and art kit giveaways.
New/used book and art supply donations are also accepted and/or donated to the community or recycled/repurposed for community-based workshops and other projects.
Volunteers are needed to help put together kits and other materials we use in the community.
